Kate was actually kind of nervous.

It was stupid to be nervous, she thought, because it was pretty clear that Reggie was into her, but the last time she'd been on a real date had been a long time ago. Especially a real first date. Still, she'd forced Carla Jean to spend several hours in her room, picking through all the clothes she'd collected over her years on the island. As it turned out, she had a lot of super cute stuff, but in the end, she'd settled on a purple sundress and a pair of sandals. Normally she didn't bother with makeup, but she was wearing some now, having dipped into what Effy had left behind.

The last time she'd put on makeup was for Hannibal, which had left her weirdly way less nervous than she was now. She didn't get it, but she was doing her best to deal with it, only pacing a little in her room as she waited for Reggie.

Maybe he was right. Maybe dating someone she lived with was totally nuts, but it was too late now. Besides, she definitely wanted to kiss him again.

The problem with Reggie having turned into a girl for a couple of days was that now Kate was super torn about what she was supposed to do. On one hand, he was back to being Reggie now and everything was supposedly normal, except that she still kind of had a thing for him and she hadn't said anything about it yet and she was sort of gearing herself up to do so. That was her plan and it was a way better plan than just waiting around and squashing things down, because she'd never been very good at that. Or, even worse, waiting for him to make the first move.

On the other hand, he'd been a girl. The chance to give him a hard time about it wouldn't be around forever and she didn't want to let it just pass her by.

So she was torn.

Classes had started and she was actually taking a few this term, so she was lounging in front of their hut, books and papers spread around her under the pretense that she was doing homework. Mostly she was working on her tan, in a bikini top and shorts, still trying to figure out what to do about Reggie.

Ask him on a date, or mock him mercilessly until the end of time.

Kate still isn't sure how she's talked her roommates into going down to Rapture with her, but somehow she's managed. It's probably a really bad idea, right up there with a lot of things she's done lately, but she needs to do something. It feels like she wants to crawl out of her skin most of the time and everything she's tried so far has only managed to keep that feeling at bay for a very short period of time.

So now she's going to put herself in a dangerous situation and see if that helps any.

She's been down there before, but that was with Kate and they were the only ones there. Now there are people moving around, it's like the city has come alive again. That's what she's been told. The people are back and there's movement and she wants to see it. Even if the place is crumbling and falling down, she wants to see it alive instead of dead.

"Ready?" she asks. She should get her gun, but she doesn't want to touch it. Not again. They'll be fine without it, she figures. They'll be okay.

For the most part, Kate doesn't believe people when they say they just know that someone is gone. Every time someone has disappeared, she's noticed things that are strange, but she's never had this feeling, this intense knowledge that they're just gone, not like others have claimed. Sometimes she wonders if they're just telling themselves they knew to make themselves feel better when it takes them several days to notice.

That's sort of how she feels when she finds herself standing in the middle of the hut Harry used to live in, a box of jewellery in her hands. It's been two days since she last saw him, but sometimes that happens. Sometimes they both get busy and they miss each other instead of connecting, that's just life and she's taken it for granted. So a little part of her wants to tell herself that she's known all along, but the truth is that she's only just realized it now and she feels stupid. Lost. She feels like a child playing at being grown up and suddenly all the things she's been doing over the last few months don't matter.

Clutching the box against her stomach, she makes her way home and she sits in the front yard, letting Chang crawl into her lap even though he's far too big to do it. He crushes the box, but she doesn't bother moving it. She isn't even sure why she took it. Harry never gave any of it to her and now he never will.

So many people have disappeared and she hasn't cried. She isn't going to start now, but when Chang whines and licks her chin, she wraps both her arms around him and presses her face into his fur.
