At the question, Effy reaches inside and nudges the bag of pot until it falls onto the counter, a few leaves falling free of the burlap bag. Whether or not she wants to use the leaves, Effy doesn't know— hardly feels qualified to make any decisions at all these days, let alone something like this. It's easier to do nothing. To leave the drugs behind fully, and with them, whatever amount of blame they might carry for driving her to this point, feeling as though she's constantly splintering down the middle. Instead, she reaches out for the bowl in Kate's hands, taking a detour over to the sink to wash her hands.
It's always been easier to use her hands. Perhaps Pandora's mother wouldn't approve, but of all the people Effy feels indebted to, Pandora's mother might be at the very bottom of the list.
