"Yeah," Effy agreed quietly, pressing her lips together in thought. She held onto that memory, strangely, and more so when the times grew rough. To have it serve as that ever-present reminder that things could get worse, could've been worse, and that sometimes it was okay to count the blessings one by one. To dwell in the good, rather than to try and fix everything where it continuously peeled at the seams.
"I thought he was gone," she admitted, pushing harder with the paddle as they started to follow the line of the shore, keeping a distance to keep from brushing the canoe against the reeds below. "Couldn't wake him up. But he's alright now. After you survive that, you can survive anything, yeah?"
