"You, with the way you're panicking," Effy grinned, moving more smoothly through the water, hardly splashing any of it as she went. This was, in some respects, her natural element. There was a reason why she'd always run to the lake back in Bristol. Whenever she was upset, whenever she wasn't sure what to do, she'd run to the lake and simply lay on the dock, staring up at the endless blue of the sky while the stretch of water around her kept on lapping, predictable, unlike anything else in her life. "But I don't think it actually makes a difference. One person gets to look ahead and help steer."
Carefully, her fingers tightened around the side of the boat, making sure that the waves wouldn't turn it over entirely, knuckles turning white as they gripped.
Without waiting for Kate to decide, Effy decided it was probably a better idea to sit in front, and keep the panic from immediately hitting Kate were they to come across anything unexpected. She shot a smile, half-apologetic and half-amused, over her shoulder.
